I intensely dislike Hwy 1 for, among other reasons, the environmental damage caused due to its ignorance of the topography (the same issues make Hwy 443, which ascends a gradual grade of the Beth Horon ridge, a better drive). The new construction is bittersweet since, alongside further destruction of the limestone hillsides, there are a number of tunnels which aim to limit the environmental disruption.
